January 28, 2023 - Matthew 5 - 7

Teacher: Won Huh

The Jews had been waiting for hundreds of years for the Son of David to come and restore their kingdom to the former glory. It had been about 1000 years since the rule of King David.

John the Baptist starts preaching that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

Then Jesus shows up, clears the temple (a sign of a righteous king), heals the sick (a sign of a prophet or the presence of God's power), speaks with authority, and says He has good news that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

When a huge excited crowd shows up from all over the region, Jesus announces His Kingdom and gives His State of the Kingdom address.

The crowd was astonished with Jesus' speech and applauded. Was Jesus' kingdom anything like what they expected? There were others who were turned away by the speech and decided to do everything they could to disrupt and even kill Him.

Read that speech in Matthew Chapters 5, 6 and 7 and note where you would have stood up and applauded (like they do at the State of the Union addresses). You can share your favorite parts in class next week.

February 4, 2023 - Matthew 8 - 13

Teacher: Gordy Gates

Go back to 1st century thinking and read Matthew Chapters 8 - 13 as though you're seeing and hearing these things for the first time. Then, we'll be able to unpack the layers of the onion and get to the deeper meanings of what's going on.

One of your assignments for this week is to read Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address. The Kingdom of Heaven coming has a lot to do with the reference in that address.

We will then look at three facets of Jesus: Liberating Jesus, Perplexing Jesus and Cryptic Jesus which I found jumping out all over the place in those 6 chapters.

February 11, 2023 - Matthew 14 - 20

Teacher: Mark Johnson

We finally see the crowd leaving and we'll try to figure out why they are leaving. I have some questions about what's going on at the transfiguration. What's that all about? Then we end up with some common sense advice for the church on things like forgiveness and how to get along with each other. It's a grab bag of things in that area but it gets to the point where the crowd leaves and Christ begins even more so trying to get people to understand He's walking towards death. Then we end right as he takes His last trip to Jerusalem.

On February 18 we will continue in the gospel of Matthew, chapters 21--25. If you would like some extra reading, I would suggest, "To Meet the Bridegroom" (click here to listen) at the end of the book, Christ's Object Lessons, or choose a chapter or two from Desire of Ages, such as "Your King Is Coming" (listen) or "The Least of These My Brethren" (listen).

See you next Sabbath.

February 25, 2023 - Matthew 26 - 28

Teacher: Ed Reifsnyder

The last three chapters of Matthew cover the final events. I have a friend who in her 60s retired from teaching school and started a doctorate in theology and she is developing an alternative view of what actually happened at the cross. What happened? What did Jesus' crucifixion do? I plan on covering the various theories of atonement that are out there in theology-land. You can do some advanced study on that so we're not starting from scratch as we talk about various ideas of what Jesus' death actually accomplished and how it worked.

March 18, 2023 - Mark 11 - 16

Teacher: Won Huh

Mark Chapters 11-16 cover the final week of Jesus starting with the triumphal entry orchestrated by Jesus, raising the hopes of His followers that He would be crowned the King of the Jews. By the end of the week, Jesus was crowned and called the King of the Jews – but not in any way they had hoped. To their disappointment, Jesus was crucified on a cross with a crown of thorns and the title, “King of the Jews.”

As you read these chapters look for what Jesus tried to get across to His disciples, followers, church leaders and the general public. Also look for what He reveals about the character of God and the kingdom of God. Do you opt-in to His kingdom?

March 25, 2023 - Luke 1 - 5

Teacher: Mark Johnson

Luke Chapters 1 - 5 covers the first 30 years of Christ's life and has the best Christmas story including the visit from the angel, Mary, Zacharias and Elizabeth. It covers Christ going to the temple, the baptism of Christ, and the temptation.

I want you to focus on how Christ is preparing for the time when He starts His ministry. For God to send His Son into the world to do the most important thing in the universe, to "waste" 30 years of it seems kind of interesting. What was going on in those 30 years that was preparing for the three and a half years of ministry He had?

"The Perfect Man"

"Never was God more Godlike than when, in the person of Jesus, He was crucified for our sin." "Never did anything more exhibit, never will anything more redound to the glory of God than His making the Son lower than the angels in order to taste death for His people." A. W. Pink

"The perfect man was a high ideal in Greek culture. Written with Greeks in mind, Luke's Gospel shows how Jesus was the perfect man given as the perfect sacrifice for the sin of all people. Christ is the ideal human - the perfect model for us to follow. We must stand in awe of his character, which met humanity's highest ideals as well as God's demand for an atonement for sin, He is, at one and the same time, or model and our Savior." NLB

April 29, 2023 - John 1 - 4

Teacher: Mark Johnson

Much of the reason John was written was because there were questions about the nature of Christ. Was He really God or not and what was the nature when He was incarnated? Was He really half man, half God?

Then in the third chapter we of course have John 3:16 but we usually quit after 16 and we don't read 17 through 21 which talks a lot about how He is not here to condemn us. He talks about the judgment.

And then in John 4 we have Jesus reaching out very early in the book to reach out to the Samaritans and to the Gentiles.

These are the areas we will be focusing on next week.

May 6, 2023 - John 5 - 8

Teacher: Won Huh

John 3:16 is representative of the Book of John. John wants the readers to believe in Jesus Christ the Son of God so they can receive eternal life. You can find many similar verses in the book. John uses the word “believe” more than 80 times in his book. You will see examples of belief as well as examples of stubborn unbelief.

I want to focus on the two stories – one at the beginning of chapter 5 (the story of the healing at the Pool of Bethesda) and the one at the beginning of chapter 8 (the woman brought to Jesus). What does Jesus free them from? What did they have to do to receive that freedom? How does, or does belief play into these two events?

May 13, 2023 - John 9 - 12

Teacher: Gordy Gates

We're going to do an alternative way to look for Jesus - that is, we're going to look for ways to miss Jesus in John, Chapters 9 - 12. Please fill out the following for next week:

Ways to miss Jesus

Man born blind - John 9 & 10

Lazarus - John 11

Jesus anointed / entry into Jerusalem - John 12

We're going to peel back the layers on John 9 - 12 and diagram how people missed Jesus in these stories. As you read these stories, you'll see how very easily we miss seeing Jesus. We'll spend most of our time on John chapters 9 & 10.

May 27, 2023 - John 18 - 21

Teacher: Mark Johnson

Next week, we finish the Book of John. We start with the arrest in the garden, the trial, the death, the resurrection and the work of Jesus afterwards. John fills in many places where the earlier gospels have left out. In the Book of John the death on the cross is less than one verse. It talks a lot about other things getting up to the crucifixion and after the crucifixion.

We will bring all four gospels together to see what really happened on the cross and what it really means to us.

June 10, 2023 - Acts 13 - 18:22

Teacher: Ed Reifsnyder

Fellow class members, I thought I would give you advance notice of this week’s three points we will cover in class in case you want to do some advance investigation.

  1. The Other. Early church history is notable for collisions with The Other. You may want to do a little research about the concept of The Other.
  2. The Jerusalem Council. One of the results of the collision of The Other with The Other is th Jerusalem Council. You may want to particularly review Acts 15.
  3. Paul’s evangelistic preferences. Paul’s mission was very focused and intentional in objectives. You might spend some time evaluating how Paul did business and who his target audience was.
Happy exploring!

June 17, 2023 - Acts 18:23 - 21:16

Teacher: Won Huh

Next week, we read about Paul’s third missionary journey, about 2500 miles through Asia Minor and Europe – about half of that on land by foot and half by sea.

There were a couple of discussions about receiving the baptism of John vs. being baptized by the Holy Spirit. What was that all about? Were there any differences? Is one better than the other? Which baptism have you received?

Why was Paul so stubbornly determined to go to Jerusalem even though the Holy Spirit was telling him directly and through the warnings of his fellow believers that he would face imprisonment and hardship there?

July 15, 2023 - Romans 12 - 16

Teacher: Mark Johnson

Next week, we finish off the book of Romans with chapters 12 through 16. Now that we have all this doctrine Paul has confused us with, how then should we live? What is Christian behavior? How do we treat each other? How do we treat people who are different than we are? How do we love unconditionally?

July 22, 2023 - 1 Corinthians 1 - 11

Teacher: Dee Briggs

We should find this letter very interesting as most of the questions and problems Paul was addressing then are still very current. Here are some of them:

  • Spiritual immaturity and church discipline
  • Disputes and divisions
  • Challenges for the married and the unmarried
  • Questions regarding the Lord's Supper
  • Lack of understanding or the misuse of Spiritual Gifts

Please read 1 Corinthians 1 - 11. There will be a quiz.

August 19, 2023 - Philippians

Teacher: Gordy Gates

We know for sure that Paul is in prison during this writing. Keep that in perspective as you read Philippians. Paul is struggling with his imprisonment and he is going to tell us what his remedy is for fear, which I believe torments human existence. Paul is also going to tell us by eliminating fear in your life, here's what you can expect to happen. Keep the idea in your mind that he is in prison, he's dealing with the concept of fear and how if you can manage fear how it changes your life.

August 26, 2023 - Ephesians

Teacher: Won Huh

Paul presents the gospel multiple times in the book of Ephesians. I especially like the one in Chapter 2 so we’ll focus on that one.

Paul likes to present theology then go into practical advice. In Ephesians, what does Paul say that God desires from us now that we are saved? Why?

What does Paul pray for in Chapter 3 that will help us achieve what God desires from us?

September 2, 2023 - Colossians

Teacher: Dee Briggs

Colossians is like Ephesians but shorter. The letters to Colossians, Ephesians and Philemon were all carried by the same person, Tychicus. It's somewhat like writing to two people at Christmas with similar content but to different people. Just read the book of Colossians and bring questions we can talk about.
